Kariya Works Out, Suffers Setback
Mighty Duck General Manager Jack Ferreira said Tuesday there won’t be a formal announcement that Paul Kariya won’t play again this season.
But Ferreira also said, “Deep down, we’ve always felt he probably wouldn’t come back at all this season.”
Kariya, sidelined since suffering a concussion Feb. 1, suffered a significant setback in his recovery last week.
James Kelly, a Chicago neurologist, recommended Kariya increase his physical activity. But Kariya suffered headaches after an intense workout on an exercise bike last week.
“I feel pretty good,” said Kariya, who was injured when he was cross-checked in the jaw by Chicago’s Gary Suter and still suffers the effects of post-concussion syndrome. “Actually, I was feeling really good about a week ago. But I had to back it off.
“I’ve got to stay occupied. Whether it’s golfing or going for long walks. I was swimming at my place. The cold water feels good on my head.”
Kariya plans to be examined by Kelly again but says, “I’ll wait until I feel great, then go back and make a decision about where to go from there.”
