Greco Is Chosen State Player of the Year

Crescenta Valley senior Michelle Greco has been selected state player of the year in girls’ basketball and the Division I player of the year by Cal Hi-Sports.

Ruben Douglas of Bell-Jeff was named to the all-state team and was selected Division IV player of the year. Daniel Bobik of Newbury Park is on the all-state second team and Scott Long of Chaminade is on the third team.

Kelli Kobayashi of Alemany was a third-team selection in girls’ basketball.

Gilbert Arenas of Grant and Rafael Berumen of Simi Valley are on the all-state junior team. Russell Lakey of Harvard-Westlake was selected one of the top 10 sophomores and Scott Borchart of Chaminade was one of the top five freshmen.

Cara Blumfield of El Camino Real and Damaris Hinojosa of Moorpark are on the girls’ all-state junior team and Kelly Greathouse of Buena is one of the top five freshmen.

BASEBALL

Family feud: The brother-vs.-brother showdown between Matt and Jack Cassel will have to wait.

Jack, a senior at Kennedy, was set to pitch Tuesday against Chatsworth. He would have faced Matt, a sophomore designated hitter, for the first time since Northridge Little League.

“We didn’t talk much today,” Jack Cassel said. “Our little brother did all the trash talking for both of us.”

Both the Golden Cougars and Chancellors looked ready to play as they warmed up throughout a light drizzle, but a sudden cloudburst 15 minutes before game time was enough for it to be postponed.

“It was going to be an adventure,” Jack Cassel said. “The ball was slipping all over the place.”

SOFTBALL

Extra effort: Alemany’s Kim Diener has made the most of her hits this season.

The Long Beach State-bound senior has eight hits, but six have been for extra bases. Diener, batting .333, has three home runs, three doubles and an .833 slugging percentage. A Times’ All-Valley selection last season, she also is 6-3 with a 0.10 earned-run average this year.
