5 ‘Freemen’ Found Guilty After Standoff

BILLINGS, Mont. — Five members of the fiercely anti-government “Freemen” were found guilty Tuesday after a two-week trial on charges stemming from their 81-day standoff with the FBI in 1996.
After just one day of deliberation, the jury found the men guilty of various crimes linked to armed robbery and possession of firearms, to submitting a false claim to the Internal Revenue Service.
But it acquitted one key member of the group: Edwin Clark, whose foreclosed farm in rural Montana became the Freemen’s “Justus Township.”
