Man, 67, Kills Self After Standoff
SYLMAR — A 67-year-old man who held police at bay for several hours Tuesday was finally found shot to death inside his home, an apparent suicide, authorities said.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team entered the house at 6:35 p.m. after tossing about 30 canisters of tear gas into the house in the 13800 block of Astoria Street. The victim was in the back of his house, said LAPD spokesman Jason Lee.
The daylong standoff began about 11:45 a.m. when Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies attempted to serve an eviction notice on the man, who armed himself with a shotgun and pointed it at the deputies, Lee said.
The deputies asked the LAPD for assistance, and efforts to talk the man out of the house failed, Lee said.
Police cordoned off the area near the intersection of Astoria Street and Gladstone Avenue during the incident, Lee said. No other injuries were reported.
