Golden West Earns Spot in State Tournament
Golden West, ranked No. 1 and the four-time defending women’s volleyball state champion, advanced to the state tournament with a 15-5, 15-3, 15-6 victory over visiting Orange Coast Saturday at Golden West.
This marks the 10th straight appearance for the Rustlers in the event, which will be held next weekend at Concordia University and Irvine Valley.
Mariah Marquis and Becky Sidoti led the Rustlers (23-1). Marquis had 12 kills and Sidoti contributed 43 assists.
In another state volleyball match:
Saddleback 3, Cerritos 2--Saddleback’s Whitney Uhl had 33 kills in the Gauchos’ 9-15, 15-9, 15-10, 7-15, 15-9 victory.
The Gauchos (20-3), ranked second in the state, advance to the state tournament. This marks the Gauchos’ first appearance in the tournament since 1978.
In women’s state soccer tournament:
Ohlone 2, Cypress 1--Cypress’ streak of 15 straight shutouts ended in the semifinals at Ventura College.
Felicia Madrigal scored in the 55th minute for the Chargers (22-3).
In the Citrus men’s basketball tournament:
Santa Ana 101, Citrus 85--Lohnnie Tape scored 25 points to lead Santa Ana (2-4) in the consolation final.
