News Emmy Nods: ABC, which fared poorly in last week’s nighttime Emmy nominations, finishing far behind HBO, NBC and CBS, earned some respect Wednesday by garnering 29 nominations for News and Documentary Emmy Awards. That topped the nomination count for rival networks, including PBS (25), NBC (17), CBS (16) and HBO (nine). Competing cable news networks CNN and MSNBC, meanwhile, lagged far behind with three nods apiece. Among individual programs, ABC’s “Nightline” garnered nine nominations, CBS’ “60 Minutes” received eight and “Dateline NBC,” ABC’s “PrimeTime Live” and TBS’ “National Geographic Explorer” had seven each. Awards ceremonies will be Sept. 10 in New York.

Small-Screen ‘Hercules’: Buena Vista Television is producing a TV version of Disney’s “Hercules” for fall 1998. The series will air Saturday mornings on ABC (where an animated version of Disney’s “101 Dalmatians” premieres this fall) and on weekdays in syndication. The film’s stars Tate Donovan (Herc) and James Woods (Hades) are on board to voice the animated TV episodes, although Danny DeVito (Phil in the film) has opted out.

“Marvin’s Room” won the grand prize at the Moscow International Film Festival Tuesday, and actors Robert De Niro, Sophia Loren, Catherine Deneuve and Gina Lollobrigida were honored for their contributions to the film industry. . . . Korn has dropped out of the remaining 1997 Lollapalooza tour dates, including Aug. 8 at the Glen Helen Blockbuster Pavilion in Devore, because guitar player James “Munky” Shaffer has been hospitalized with viral meningitis. Failure, which had been headlining the tour’s second stage, will now move up to the main stage. . . . KABC-AM (790) has confirmed that it is “negotiating” with Orlando, Fla., talk host Ed Tyll for an undisclosed spot on its lineup, and Jenny Sue Rhoades, general manager at Orlando’s WTKS-FM, where Tyll airs weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., said she expects the deal to be completed soon. . . . ABC will be “Clueless” after Aug. 8. The network is pulling the movie-inspired teen comedy, curbing its chances of developing any more momentum before shifting to the UPN network in September. . . . . After two and a half years of marriage, “Party of Five” and “Scream” star Neve Campbell, 24, has separated from her husband, Jeff Colt. . . . Friends of Egyptian-born actor Omar Sharif, 65, have told Egyptian press that he married Nadiya Aja, the 50-year-old daughter of a Saudi tycoon, at a Red Sea resort in April. The couple, however, has not confirmed the reports. Sharif has been a bachelor since the 1965 breakup of his 10-year marriage to Egyptian actress Faten Hamama.
