Tighter Rules Urged for Sewage Plant

A group of environmentalists and Malibu residents, using the Malibu Lagoon as a backdrop, called on the Regional Water Quality Control Board Tuesday to place tighter restrictions on the sewage treatment plant that sends its water into Malibu Creek.

The board is expected to vote on a new permit for the Tapia Sewage Treatment Plant on the creek at its Monday meeting in Glendale. The group says Tapia should be required to halt discharges during dry months, when Surfrider Beach has had the worst water quality; upgrade its treatment to limit algae and odor-causing nutrients, and better monitor the effects of the effluent.

The group includes Heal the Bay, Santa Monica Baykeeper, Natural Resources Defense Council and Surfrider Foundation.
