Soccer Team Might Move From San Diego
The freeway rivalry between the Splash and 10-time indoor champion San Diego, which are scheduled to meet five times this season--including the season opener in San Diego on June 14--could end.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Friday that former Socker owner Ron Hahn said it was a “low likelihood” the team would play its games in San Diego this season. Hahn and the Arena Group 2000 tried to sell the team to a consortium headed by Victor Cocchia, but the deal defaulted. The Continental Indoor Soccer League has possession of the team.
According to a league spokesman, possible options include spending 1997 on hiatus and resuming operations in 1998 with new local ownership; moving to another city for the 1998, or move the team to a city that could compete immediately--most likely Oklahoma City.
A move to Oklahoma City would not affect any team’s home schedule.
