Gene Stone; Blacklisted Writer in McCarthy Era
Gene Stone, 91, a blacklisted writer during the McCarthy anti-communism furor. Stone supervised the Depression-era Federal Theater Project of Los Angeles. But his primary career was writing, with such credits as the musical “Two-a-Day,” radio programs such as the “The Great Gildersleeve” and TV shows, including “General Electric Theater.” He was blacklisted in Hollywood after he was subpoenaed in 1952 by the House Un-American Activities Committee. Stone resumed his writing career in the 1970s with the play “Why Not Stay for Breakfast” and the book “Darling I Am Growing Old.” On Monday in Santa Monica.
