Gonzalez Weighed In at Head of Class of ’97
Cristobal Gonzalez, a junior from Ventura High, finished 50-1 this season in the 189-pound class and placed third in the state finals at Stockton to earn The Times’ wrestler of the year honor in the region.
Gonzalez, who qualified for the state tournament as a sophomore and entered this year’s tournament with a 45-0 record, has gone 91-12 over the past two seasons. He won a second consecutive Channel League championship, and Southern Section Division I and Masters titles.
Gonzalez’s only loss was a 4-3 decision to Andy Hunter of Hiram Johnson in the state semifinals.
