Wasting No Time: MVP Home Entertainment Inc.--distributor of last year’s video “Cops: Too Hot for TV”--expects to have its mini-documentary of the Feb. 28 North Hollywood shootout in stores by Friday. The half-hour video, “North Hollywood Shoot-Out: Terror in the Streets of L.A.,” features footage of both gunmen’s deaths as well as a de facto walk-through of the crime scene by a Los Angeles police officer involved in the incident. The video includes authorized footage from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department of one gunman’s suicide death that has not yet been broadcast, according to MVP. The video will sell for about $14.95; a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the LAPD.

‘Frida’ Is Next Up for Hayek: Cast into the spotlight as Matthew Perry’s co-star in the romantic comedy “Fools Rush In,” Salma Hayek has been named for the title role of legendary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo in Trimark Pictures’ upcoming biopic “Frida,” the studio announced Monday. In a role once coveted by Madonna, Hayek will portray Kahlo through her recovery from a devastating bus accident and her stormy marriage to muralist Diego Rivera. The Roberto Sneider-directed film, tentatively slated to be released in early 1998, is based on Hayden Herrera’s book “Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo.” The other roles in the film have not yet been cast, a Trimark spokesman said Monday.

No More ‘Show’ for Beatty: Ned Beatty won’t be back on board “Show Boat” for the final two weeks of its run at the Ahmanson Theatre. Understudy George McDaniel performed Beatty’s role Saturday and Sunday and will continue in the role this week. Beginning next Tuesday, Len Cariou will take over the role, and he’ll continue in it after the tour leaves L.A. A spokesman for the show said Beatty became ill over the weekend and was never contracted beyond this coming Sunday anyway. Co-star Cloris Leachman, who broke a foot on March 1 and was replaced by Carole Shelley, also won’t be back.

Cooper Flies the Royal Coop: Adam Cooper, 25-year-old principal in England’s Royal Ballet, has resigned from that company in order to continue dancing the leading role in the radically updated, gender-bending version of “Swan Lake,” which will play at the Ahmanson Theatre from April 22 to June 15. Created for him in late 1995, the role of the bare-chested lead swan made Cooper a star during an initial tour, a six-month run in London’s West End (unprecedented for ballet) and a telecast--all sanctioned by Royal Ballet management. However, according to British newspaper reports, the company refused to grant him any further leave of absence, prompting his resignation. Also during the April-to-June “Swan Lake” run at the Ahmanson, the Royal Ballet will appear at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, May 20 to 25, in repertory that Cooper danced last season in Covent Garden.

It’s Better on Tape: The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has changed plans for its birthday bash. Instead of a live, star-studded television special, the academy will celebrate by producing a documentary film called “50 Years of Television: The Television Academy’s Golden Anniversary.” The documentary will air April 23 on HBO, on which the live special had been scheduled to run. The academy said it opted for the documentary because “the wealth of classic television clips was so overwhelming that the live portion of the show became almost secondary.” Proceeds from the documentary will benefit the academy’s new Archive of American Television.

Talk-show host Ricki Lake gave birth Saturday to an 8-pound, 4-ounce boy, Milo Sebastian Sussman, at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan. The father is Lake’s husband, Rob Sussman. Lake plans to take six weeks off from her show. . . . Fox has yanked the action series “Lawless,” starring Brian Bosworth, after just one airing. “ ‘Lawless’ did not meet our expectations creatively or from a ratings perspective,” said Peter Roth, president, Fox Entertainment Group. The show, which premiered Saturday, will be replaced by “America’s Most Wanted” this week. . . . Monday’s first-day ticket sales for David Helfgott’s Aug. 25 concert at the Hollywood Bowl were “modest,” according to a source. The pianist will perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. . . . Rapper Warren G will make an in-store appearance at Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard at 6 tonight to promote the release of his new album, “Take a Look Over Your Shoulder.” . . . . . . Canadian actor Graham Greene, an Oscar nominee for his role in “Dances With Wolves,” was in a hospital last weekend after a Thursday standoff with police in which he threatened to kill himself, authorities said. Police said no charges would be filed against Greene since no weapons were involved in the incident, which ended peacefully after the actor agreed to a psychiatric assessment. . . . Ravi Shankar, the music guru who introduced the Indian sitar to the Beatles, was hospitalized Friday after becoming suddenly ill while in North Carolina for a concert at Wake Forest University. He was released Saturday.
