School District in Need of Maintenance Funds

Capistrano Unified School District trustees Monday will consider a resolution asking the Legislature to increase funding for long-needed maintenance needs.

Across the state, districts are scrambling to find money to pay for repairs and other needs after learning in January that Gov. Pete Wilson’s proposed 1997-98 state budget lacks funds for deferred maintenance.

Local school districts now foot the costly bill for most deferred maintenance costs.

The legislative analyst’s office has estimated that California schools need $2.7 billion to meet their deferred maintenance needs, according to a report.

In Capistrano Unified, there might not appear to be an urgent need for deferred maintenance funds, with 12 new schools opening within the last five years.

But with 38 schools, the district also has many campuses that are up to 20 years old and in need of repair, district spokeswoman Jackie Price said.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the district office, located at 32972 Calle Perfecto.
