*** CHOPIN: Complete Piano Works, Vol. 8. Garrick Ohlsson, piano. (Arabesque Recordings)
Ever the individualist, Ohlsson in his latest installment of the complete Chopin works for piano remains quirky, sometimes perverse, yet almost always musically compelling. With a fluent and reliable technique, the American pianist delivers many beauties and an oddball but often effective reading of Chopin’s style. On this CD are “Masterpieces and Miniatures,” 17 pieces, some of which are beloved--the F-minor Fantasy, the Berceuse, the Barcarolle and the Bolero in C--and some little known--the Tarantella, the Three Ecossaises. All of it holds up under repeated hearings.
