Mall Among Winners of Awards for Design
A fashion center that rose from the rubble of the 1994 Northridge earthquake is among the winners of the 1996 American Institute of Architects/San Fernando Valley Chapter Design Awards.
Northridge Fashion Center, which sustained heavy damage in the quake, was rebuilt by the firm RTKL.
An addition to the Matador Bookstore at Cal State Northridge--designed by Coleman/Caskey Architects--was also a winner.
Awards in such categories as residential, commercial, institutional and renovation/remodeling will be handed out at a banquet Jan. 18 at Braemar Country Club. In addition, a single firm will be recognized for a body of work, which must include at least five projects in a minimum 10-year period.
Last fall, entrants submitted color slides of their work and a panel of judges--most of them architects--pared the list down to the winners.
The other winning designers and buildings are:
* John Cambianica, Toluca Lake Health Center
* Robbins & Bown, Temple Shomrei Torah, Canoga Park
* Lee Burkhart Liu, Stone Marraccini Patterson, Rochlin Baran Balbona Inc., Department of Veterans Affairs
* Barton Myers Associates, Ivan Reitman/Northern Lights Building, Universal City
* J. Thomas Kaiser, Roger & Jane Debard residence
* Robert Lowe, Heichinrou Restaurant, Tokyo
Reservations are required for the awards banquet. For more information, call the AIA chapter office at (818) 907-7151.
