Munoz’s Goals Help Esperanza Reach Final
David Munoz scored in both halves of Monday’s game to give Esperanza a 2-0 victory over Fountain Valley and move the Aztecs to the championship game of the Marina boys’ soccer tournament.
Esperanza (12-1-1) will play San Marcos at 1:30 p.m. today.
In the Cerritos Gahr girls’ basketball tournament:
Esperanza 61, Long Beach Millikan 39--Leah Combs led Esperanza (10-3) with 16 points for the consolation championship. Heidi Hill had seven assists and Deondra Verhoeven had nine rebounds for the Aztecs.
In the Green County (Tenn.) Tournament:
Woodbridge 62, Fort Smith (Ark.) Southside 54--Krissy Duperron scored 16 points as Woodbridge defeated Southside (13-2) for the fifth place title. Cathy Joens scored 16 points and had eight rebounds for the Warriors (9-3).
Kari Duperron and Debby Caine each scored 11 points for Woodbridge.
Mary Kate Hogue had 17 points for Southside.
In the Costa Mesa tournament:
Tustin 52, Sammamish (Wash.) 46--Tustin went on a 25-2 run midway through the third quarter to seal the consolation championship. Shamekia Perkins scored 13 of her game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter for the Tillers (7-6). Brook Brown had 11 points and 16 rebounds and Chantelle Simoes had seven assists and five points.
Villa Park 38, Lakewood Mayfair 37--Missy Bynon scored 12 points for Villa Park (4-8). Allison Glikey scored 11 points for the Spartans.
Dana Hills 42, Lakewood Artesia 33--Jeri Howards scored 10 points and had 12 rebounds in a consolation victory for Dana Hills (3-10). Michelle Chambers scored 16 points for the Dolphins.
In the Santa Maria Righetti girls’ basketball tournament:
University 71, Visalia Redwood 55--Gerri Armendariz poured in a career-high 38 points and finished with nine steals and Amy McCoy scored 13 points for University (7-5) in the consolation final.
In the first round of the Savanna Tournament:
Calvary Chapel 51, Buena Park 14--Whitney Hoover had 15 points and nine steals and Christy Ring scored 14 points for Calvary Chapel (9-4), which outscored Buena Park, 21-3, in the third quarter to take a 27-point lead.
In the Pickerington (Ohio) tournament:
Brea Olinda 80, Frederick (Md.) St. John’s Academy at Prospect Hall 71 (Late Sunday)--Brea Olinda (10-1) got 31 points from Marissa Bradley and overcame a 12-point deficit to beat St. John’s, which was ranked No. 18 nationally, in the third-place game. Brea, ranked No. 5 in the national poll, got 19 points from Jennifer Saari, 13 from Stephanie Wettlin and 12 from Rochelle Anthony. The Ladycats went 2-1 in the tournament.
