Watson Talks of Skins and Bones
LA QUINTA — The Skins Game, the first nine holes of it at least, will be played this morning at Rancho La Quinta Golf Club, where Tiger Woods, John Daly, Fred Couples and Tom Watson will play for a pot of $540,000 over the weekend. The second nine will be played Sunday.
Watson said he knows his role: “I’m a spectator.”
Watson, 47, was shut out in last year’s Skins Game, which Couples won with $270,000. Like most everyone else, Watson thinks a Daly-Woods driving contest makes for good viewing. “There’ll be guys trying to hit it as hard as they can,” he said. “I just hope they let this old dog get a bone.”
Designed by Robert Trent Jones II, Rancho La Quinta measures 7,068 yards and has four par fives, the longest the 589-yard No. 5.
