The New York Rangers remained winless with Wayne Gretzky, losing, 2-1, to the Dallas Stars on Andy Moog’s brilliant goaltending performance Thursday night at New York.

Although Gretzky scored his first goal for the Rangers, Moog’s 30 saves and goals by Benoit Hogue and Brent Gilchrist led the Stars to their third consecutive win for their best start since moving to Dallas from Minnesota for the 1993-94 season.

With Mark Messier serving the second game of a suspension for a hitting-from-behind penalty on Mike Hough last Sunday against Florida, the Rangers fell to 0-2-2.

“It’s mostly disappointing more than anything; it’s the same situation we’ve seen in the last few games,” Gretzky said.

Phoenix 4, San Jose 1--The Coyotes won their regular-season home debut before a sellout crowd of 16,210 at America West Arena.

Kris King, Mike Gartner, Shane Doan and Craig Janney scored for the Coyotes, who were the Winnipeg Jets before moving to Phoenix.

The Coyotes jumped to a 3-0 lead against San Jose and then held on behind goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin, who made 24 saves.
