Anderson Record Equals Own Mark
Garret Anderson’s six hits in Friday night’s 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers set a team record, but it wasn’t the first time the Angel left fielder had accomplished the feat.
Anderson went six for eight for triple-A Vancouver in a 13-inning game in 1994. He needed 15 innings to collect six singles Friday night, falling one short of the major-league record for singles in a game, set by Cleveland’s Johnny Burnett in an 18-inning game on July 10, 1932.
“I thought I might have tied a [team] record or something, but I never thought it would be a record,” Anderson said. “Rod [Carew, Angel batting instructor] played here when he was still young, so I figured he would have had the record.
“It doesn’t cancel out the year I’ve had--it hasn’t been the best of seasons--but it’s nice to be able to say I had six knocks in a game.”

Ranger Manager Johnny Oates will go with a rotation of John Burkett, Ken Hill and Darren Oliver for the first three games of the division series against the New York Yankees. He hasn’t decided on a possible Game 4 starter but said Burkett, acquired in an August trade with the Florida Marlins, would start Game 5 if necessary. . . . Happy birthday to Angel majority owner Gene Autry, who turns 89 today. . . . Angel interim Manager John McNamara called Oates in his office before Saturday’s game to congratulate him on winning the American League West title. . . . Angel reliever Greg Gohr’s save Friday night was his first in the major leagues. It had been so long since Gohr pitched that his last appearance came Sept. 12 when Angels were still mathematically in contention for a playoff berth. . . . Shortstop Benji Gil’s sixth-inning error Saturday ended a string of eight errorless games for the Rangers.
