Tonight’s Football Games
NONLEAGUE
Santa Ana Valley (0-0) vs. No. 1 Mater Dei (0-0), Santa Ana Stadium, 7:30 p.m.
The biggest challenge for Valley in this game will be, of course, Mater Dei. But the biggest challenge for the Monarchs may be themselves. “They have to understand that Valley is in a situation that they have nothing to lose,” Coach Bruce Rollinson said. A key player for Valley is Brian Fort, a 5-9, 150-pound defensive back and wide receiver. Fort is one of three returning starters for the Falcons. Mater Dei is stocked with talent. Its passing game should be exceptional, with Nick Stremick at quarterback and David Castleton and Rod Perry as wide receivers. The running game is equally powerful, with tailback James Farley and fullback Mike McNair. Noteworthy: Rollinson and first-year Valley Coach Eddie Steward competed against each other in football and track when Rollinson attended Mater Dei and Steward attended Santa Ana.
