UCLA running back Skip Hicks has still not been cleared to play Saturday against Northeast Louisiana in the Rose Bowl, though that is expected today, and tight end Mike Grieb is out because of an ankle injury.

Quarterback Cade McNown has a tender shoulder from lifting weights.

Backup running back Ryan Roques suffered a cut on a hand against Tennessee that required stitches, and is questionable.

Wide receiver Jim McElroy was in on 44 plays against Tennessee, but his back is acting up again and he is doubtful for the Bruin home opener. Another wideout, Rodney Lee, suffered a shoulder injury at practice Wednesday.

Backup tackle Gene Waters stepped on a sprinkler at Spaulding Field and sprained his ankle.

Questionable running, the passing game is hampered. What will the Bruins do Saturday night?

“Play defense and punt,” said Coach Bob Toledo, laughing.

Freshman running backs Durrell Price and Keith Brown have been getting extra work, as has backup quarterback Steve Buck.

Senior wide receiver Derek Ayers, hampered by ankle problems since the first week of practice, is also nearly full speed.
