Firefighters battling a 2,300-acre blaze in dense forest and brush near Yosemite National Park were close to bringing it under control Sunday.

Local fire officials said 85% of the fire had been contained--thanks to cooler temperatures and air dumping of fire retardant--and that they expected to gain full control by this evening.

The fire, which began Thursday, has destroyed 14 homes and forced the evacuation of about 100 people in southern Mariposa County. Residents who were evacuated have been allowed to return home.

Nearly 2,000 people have been involved in the firefighting effort, centered on an area about 25 miles from Yosemite National Park.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Sunday.
