OLYMPIC REPORT / 40 DAYS TO THE GAMES : U.S. Women Scored On but Win Easily

Abbey Link of the Pennsylvania State 18-and-Under All Stars had an RBI double in Hazleton, Pa., to drive home the first run scored against the U.S. Olympic softball team in 35 games. But Lisa Fernandez and Shelia Connell each homered to lead an 11-hit attack as Team USA finished with a 9-1 victory in the first of two exhibition victories. Michele Granger pitched a no-hitter in the other 1-0 win over Compton. . . . Beth Bunge had the 10th longest shot put in U.S. track and field history with a throw of 58 feet 6 1/2 inches in winning the Olympic trials tuneup meet at Long Beach State. . . . U.S. Olympic fencing team member Leslie Marx advanced to the semifinals in women’s epee by beating her sister-in-law, Suzanne Marx, 15-6, at the U.S. Fencing Association’s national championship tournament in Cincinnati. She will face Donna Stone. The other semifinalists are Kathy Carpenter and Margo Miller of Culver City. . . . With less than six weeks until the opening ceremonies and more than 3 million tickets still to be sold, the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games began over-the-counter sales Saturday morning with about 60 people in line before the 8 a.m. start. No sales figures were disclosed.
