Dole Running Mate
Re “Gov. Engler Leads List as Dole’s Ticket Choices Weighed,” May 19: Without a doubt, Bob Dole’s vice-presidential running mate must fill a tall order. He must have impeccable conservative credentials, yet still be palatable to moderates; he must be familiar with the political arena yet far enough removed from Washington to be considered an outsider; he must have a popular national identity; hail from a state with a large number of electoral votes, preferably one that promises to be contentious in November; he must be charismatic with a demonstrated appeal to women and younger voters; and if he can rekindle memories of Ronald Reagan in the minds of voters, well, that of course would be a plus.
Believe it or not, the perfect candidate does exist, right here in California. His name? Charlton Heston.
