CSUN to Salute Top Achievers in ’96 Class

They are the best and brightest of Cal State Northridge’s class of 1996, men and women whose academic and athletic achievements have made them outstanding graduates among the more than 6,300 students receiving degrees this week.

This evening, they’ll be saluted at CSUN’s 14th annual Honors Convocation.

Beginning at 5 p.m. at the University Club, the 90-minute ceremony will recognize the exceptional achievements of 1,100 undergraduate and graduate students, said Jamie Rigney of CSUN’s student development office. History professor Ronald L. Davis will deliver the keynote address.

Each participant will receive a medallion, along with a handshake from CSUN President Blenda J. Wilson. In addition, seven students will receive special recognition for service to the university and the community:

* Sean Allen, a candidate for a bachelor’s degree in psychology, will receive the President’s Associates Award for Outstanding Graduating Senior.

* Lynn Amate, a candidate for a bachelor’s degree in finance, will receive the Karen, Leon and Rita Goldstein Sauter Memorial Award.

* Alaric Kim Foong Chong, a candidate for a master’s degree in mathematics, will receive the Outstanding Graduating Senior Award.

* Jimmy Doi, a candidate for a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, will receive the Alumni Assn.’s Outstanding Graduating Senior Award.

* Yvonne Gilon, a candidate for a bachelor’s degree in finance, will receive the Wolfson Scholar Award, an honor given each year to CSUN’s top academic graduate.

* Thomas MacNeil, a candidate for a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, will receive the President’s Associates Award for Outstanding Graduating Senior.

* Patricia Suenaga, a candidate for a bachelor’s degree in sociology, will receive the Mildred Z. Minninberg Memorial Fund Award, an honor given each year to CSUN’s outstanding returning student.
