Ventura’s Whalen Earns Coach Award

Ventura College’s Jim Whalen has been named California men’s tennis coach of the year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn.

“It is the most prestigious honor that I have received in my 38 years of coaching and I am extremely proud,” said Whalen, who received the award Thursday.

“I credit my tennis teams of the past 15 years for their hard work and dedication to help make Ventura tennis a competitive program.”

Volleyball

Coin flips Saturday determined the sites of Tuesday’s second-round matches in the boys’ Southern Section playoffs.

In Division I, third-seeded Royal will play at Loyola, fourth-seeded Harvard-Westlake is at Santa Barbara and Hoover hosts San Marcos.

In Division II, second-seeded Highland is at San Gabriel and Canyon hosts Claremont.

In Division III, second-seeded Campbell Hall is at Carpinteria.

Soccer

Midfielder Shunta Shimizu of St. Francis High has committed to St. Mary’s, an NCAA Division I program. St. Francis sweeper Andy VanOrden has committed to Claremont-Mudd, an NCAA Division III school.

Both played last season for the Golden Knights, who won the Southern Section Division III championship.

The San Fernando Valley Fury/Golden Eagles, a girls’ 17-and-under club soccer team, will conduct tryouts on May 19, June 2 and June 9 at Canoga Park High from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Valley United club has scheduled tryouts for boys under 16 at Kennedy High from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 14, 16, 21, 23, 28 and 30, and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on May 19.

Golf

Sylvia Kim of Wood Ranch Country Club in Simi Valley shot a 36-hole total of 150 to win Flight A of the Women’s Southern California Golf Assn. Desert Event, played on five courses in Palm Springs.

Betty Bross of Braemar Country Club in Tarzana had a two-round net score of 144 to place first in Flight C.

Baseball

Saugus High shortstop Nate Wright has committed to Biola. Wright will play baseball and soccer for the NAIA school.

Junior pitcher Mike Schultz of Cleveland High has been invited to join the U.S. 18-and-under team that will play in the Friendship Games. Schultz and 16 teammates will travel to Australia July 3 through July 21 to compete against teams from Australia, Japan and Korea.
