Lighting Upgrade for Downtown Planned

As the first step in illuminating the downtown area for residents, the Planning Commission has approved a proposal to install 42 lighting fixtures in the parking lots along El Camino Real.

The 14-foot lampposts, painted a rustic red to blend with the area’s old-fashioned atmosphere, will illuminate the Mission Texaco, Mitchell and Love House parking lots.

City officials hope the $84,000 project will create a safer downtown environment and attract more people to the area in the evening, said Thomas Tomlinson, planning director.

The City Council will consider the project on May 7.

City officials will next look at installing lights in the parking lot next to the historic Capistrano Depot, Tomlinson said.
