County Accepting Applications for Junior Lifeguard Program
Applications are now available for the six-week summer Los Angeles County Junior Lifeguard program for boys and girls 9 to 17 at all main ocean lifeguard stations, a county fire captain said Monday.
The program will operate morning and afternoon weekday sessions from July 1 through Aug. 8, Capt. Bob Buchanan said.
The sessions will be offered at 10 beaches: Avalon, Cabrillo, Torrance, Redondo, Hermosa, Manhattan, Venice, Santa Monica, Will Rogers and Zuma.
To be eligible, participants must be able to swim a 100-yard course in one minute or less. There is an enrollment fee of $225, which includes a lifeguard T-shirt and a bathing suit, Buchanan said.
The classes are three hours long, and applicants can enroll in either morning or afternoon sessions.
They will be given by county lifeguards and will consist of water safety, body and board surfing, lifesaving and rescue techniques, CPR, first aid and physical conditioning.
