Cable Firm to Offer Refunds of Late Fees
Paragon Cable subscribers have until April 1 to request a refund of late charges paid to the company between Oct. 1, 1991, and last Dec. 20, officials said.
The refunds are part of settlement reached with the Orange County district attorney’s office in October. According to the settlement, Paragon will refund $5.05 for each monthly late charge paid.
Former customers will receive a cash refund, while current customers will get credits to their accounts. In case a claim is made for more than three late fees, proof of payment must be submitted, company officials said.
The settlement is the result of an investigation by the district attorney’s office into the company’s late-payment fee of $11 a month.
The consumer protection division of the office filed a lawsuit against Paragon alleging that the charge was excessive and that bill due dates were not clear.
The company did not admit wrongdoing as part of the settlement but agreed to refund a portion of the late fees and reduce future charges to $5 for each billing period.
