Senior golfer Lee Trevino, who is playing in this weekend’s Toshiba Classic at Newport Beach Country Club, isn’t easily impressed with new ideas.

After a fine drive during a pro-am round, Trevino was asked if he was familiar with the DME Rangefinder, an electronic device that uses laser techniques to measure the distance to the flag.

“Would you ever use one?” he was asked.

“Why do I need one?” Trevino replied, then pointed to his caddie, Herman Mitchell. “That’s why I pay him big bucks. Watch this. Hey, Herman, how much do we have to the flag?”

“One-sixty-two,” Mitchell answered.

“See what I mean,” Trevino said.
