Tequila to Attain Nationhood: The marketer of Jose Cuervo Gold has crafted an elaborate promotion to declare the tequila its own nation in the British Virgin Islands and with a constitution that guarantees one’s right to party. Heublein Inc. has leased an 8-acre resort island, formerly known as Marina Cuy, and declared it the Republic of Cuervo Gold. The company will hold lotteries around the country to choose government leaders and plans to petition the United Nations for recognition. “We feel if we throw a really terrific party at the U.N., we can gain acceptance into the General Assembly,” a Heublein spokesman said.
