CITY SECTION FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : Narbonne Upsets Defending Champion Sylmar
Damon Rogers returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to give eighth-seeded Narbonne the lead and it held on to upset top-seeded Sylmar, 22-21, in a City Section 4-A Division quarterfinal playoff game at Sylmar.
The Gauchos (10-2) broke a 25-game Sylmar winning streak.
The Spartans recovered two onside kicks and beat the Narbonne secondary all night on fly patterns. But their last offensive play of the night was telling.
On fourth and 10 at Sylmar’s 39, quarterback Chris Cervantes threw 50 yards to wide open Rasheed Coleman, who had his defender beaten by 10 yards. But Coleman, who earlier had scored on a 46-yard pass play after a momentary juggle, dropped the pass.
With that, Sylmar’s chances at a third consecutive city title were dashed.
Kennedy 48, Franklin 25--Calvin Zinck completed 13 of 16 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns for Kennedy (12-0), which advanced to a game against Dorsey a week from Friday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
San Pedro 14, Crenshaw 6--Mike Castaneda of San Pedro (8-3) scored twice on short runs in the third quarter to lead a 4-A victory over the Cougars (5-5-1) at Daniels Field.
Castaneda’s touchdown runs of two and nine yards followed a Kirk Summerville interception and a fumble recovery by Jomar Butler. Castaneda finished with a game-high 90 yards in 16 carries.
DIVISION 3-A
Eagle Rock 25, Verdugo Hills 7--Red Navarrette hit Ismael Lagunas on a 48-yard pass play to give the Dons a 12-7 lead in the third quarter, and Jorge Molina recovered a blocked kick in the end zone four plays later for top-seeded Eagle Rock (10-2) at Occidental College.
Reseda 30, El Camino Real 14--Two plays after Reseda’s Tony Mendoza recovered Damon Robinson’s fumble on the opening kickoff, Robert Granillo made a diving catch of a 25-yard pass by Jamal Washington for a 7-0 Reseda lead less than 90 seconds into the game and the Regents (9-3) never looked back.
Monroe 25, Bell 22--Aaron Arnold threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Kenyatta Burris with four seconds to play to give the Vikings (9-3) a victory after they had squandered a 19-7 lead at Bell (5-6-1).
Monroe drove 74 yards for the winning touchdown in 2 minutes 24 seconds, with Arnold and Burris accounting for 47 of the yards on five pass plays.
Belmont 27, University 20--In overtime, Fabian Villa threw an eight-yard halfback pass to quarterback Eduardo Vargas as the Sentinels (6-6) defeated University (5-7) in a 3-A game at Westchester High.
The score was tied, 13-13, at the end of regulation, and the teams traded touchdowns in overtime, in which each team was given the ball on its opponent’s 10-yard line with four downs to score.
Belmont scored on its second possession and held University out of the end zone.
