NHL ROUNDUP : Stevenson Is Back for Canadiens

Turner Stevenson finally is back on track.

The Montreal right winger scored 3:12 into overtime Monday night at Montreal, giving the Canadiens a 4-3 victory over the slumping Hartford Whalers and their fifth consecutive victory.

“I’ve been working on going to the net--that’s what you have to do to score,” said Stevenson, who took advantage of a turnover in the Hartford zone to flip a backhand shot into an open side past Sean Burke.

After going scoreless in his first 15 games this season, Stevenson got his first of the season in a 5-1 victory over Ottawa on Saturday night. With goals in consecutive games, he thinks the pressure is off.

Damphousse and Pierre Turgeon also scored for the Canadiens. Kevin Smyth, Geoff Sanderson and Steven Rice scored for the Whalers, who have won only three of their last 11.

Montreal defenseman Lyle Odelein took a 10-minute misconduct in the first period to become the league’s first player to reach 100 penalty minutes this season. Odelein has served 106 minutes and is on pace for 457 minutes this season, still short of Dave Schultz’s 1974-75 record of 472.

Colorado 3, Edmonton 3--Doug Weight’s goal at Edmonton with two seconds left in regulation--his third of the game--allowed the Oilers to end a four-game losing streak. The game was played before 9,384 fans, the smallest crowd ever in Northlands Coliseum.
