BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS
Utility infielder Rene Gonzales of the Angels will file for free agency, and relief pitcher Mike Butcher, a six-year free agent, will not return to the team, according to agent Danny Horwitz, who represents them.
Horwitz said the Angels plan to retain reserve infielder Rod Correia.
“But we’re not happy about that,” he said. “He wants to be with an organization that wants to give him a chance.”
Correia played a few games at shortstop after starter Gary DiSarcina went out with a thumb injury Aug. 3, but the Angels then moved second baseman Damion Easley to shortstop and called Jose Lind up from triple-A Vancouver to play second.
Butcher opened the season with four victories but fell out of Manager Marcel Lachemann’s favor in the second half and was demoted to Vancouver.
