BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Gooden’s Contract Gets Skeptical Look
Eugene Orza, associate general counsel of the Major League Baseball Players Assn., was a field visitor during batting practice and said that the contract Dwight Gooden has signed with the New York Yankees will not be approved until Gooden gets a certified agent who examines the contract on Gooden’s behalf.
“It has 10 pages of special covenants,” Orza said. “No player could have negotiated it on his own.” Gooden’s agent, Ray Negron, has applied to the union for certification but is unlikely to get it, Orza said.
