Thousand Oaks 14, Royal 3--Senior running back Brandon Jackson ran for 180 yards and one touchdown to lead the visiting Lancers.
Thousand Oaks (3-1, 1-0) opened the scoring on its first possession when reserve quarterback Scott Matalon, who had five carries for 15 yards, went over from one-yard out to cap an 80-yard, 10-play drive.
Matalon completed nine of 16 passes for 127 yards and the Lancer defense held Royal to 49 yards in 19 carries, including an interception by Josh Casillas.
Royal (1-3, 0-1) scored its only points when Matt Pitstick kicked a 39-yard field goal with no time left in the second quarter. The Highlanders, after being held without a first down on their first four possessions, drove down to the Lancer 22-yard line but had to settle for the field goal.
After a scoreless third quarter, Thousand Oaks broke the game open when Jackson scored from three yards out with 7:28 remaining in the game.
Thousand Oaks’ defense then forced Royal to punt and Thousand Oaks ran out the last 6:14 to preserve the victory.
