COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal Sinks Pepperdine in Final Seconds, 7-5
Sophomore Brent Albright scored five goals, including a two-point goal with 22 seconds remaining in the match, to give fifth-ranked California a 7-5 victory over sixth-ranked Pepperdine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo opener Friday in Malibu.
Third-quarter goals by Alan Herrmann and Scott Seminoff gave Pepperdine a 5-4 lead, but Cal scored three consecutive goals in the fourth quarter.
Herrmann and Seminoff each had two goals for the Waves, who play UC Santa Barbara (8:50 a.m.) and UCLA (1:30 p.m.) today in the 12-team Southern California tournament at USC.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Pepperdine d. Akron, 9-15, 17-15, 15-17, 15-11, 15-11--Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Sanderson had 32 kills for the Waves (5-1) in the Rodeway Inn/Montana Pie Classic at Missoula, Mont. Sophomore setter Becci Roehl had a career-best 81 assists for Pepperdine.
In an earlier match, Pepperdine defeated Colorado State, 15-10, 16-14, 15-5, behind 15 kills from freshman middle blocker Anna Witkowski. Junior outside hitter Ann Windes added 14 kills and 11 digs for the Waves, who play Montana at 6:30 p.m. today.
Northern Arizona d. CS Northridge, 15-7, 15-6, 15-5--Carrie Kapfenberg had nine kills and nine digs at Northern Arizona, but the visiting Matadors lost their fourth match in a row and were swept for the fifth time this season.
Holli Hansen and Crystal Newquist each added eight kills for Northridge (1-7), which had a hitting percentage of .127.
Heather Hofmans had 24 assists and 10 digs for the Matadors.
Susan Brondell had 19 kills with a .667 hitting percentage for Northern Arizona (3-1), and Jenny Treglown added 13 kills with a .500 hitting percentage.
MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY
Rio Hondo 56, Santa Barbara City 62, Ventura 73, Antelope Valley 74, Cuesta 92, Santa Monica 143, Hancock 174--Miguel Ibarra paced Ventura with a third-place finish in the Ventura Beach Run at Seaside Park.
Ibarra, a freshman from Fillmore High, timed 21 minutes 36 seconds over the four-mile course.
WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY
Ventura 46, Antelope Valley 56, Santa Barbara City 75, Santa Monica 88, Cuesta 88, Rio Hondo 123, Hancock no score--Josefina Sanchez, the defending Western State Conference champion, paced Ventura with a first-place time of 20:13 over the 5,000-meter course in the Ventura Beach Run at Seaside Park.
Jolenne Argandar finished second in 21:05 for Antelope Valley.
MEN’S SOCCER
Mission 3, Harbor 0--Kris Swanson scored two goals, Brian Murray one, and goalie Diego Valencia had five saves for Mission in a nonconference match at Harbor.
