PREP FOOTBALL ‘95: GARDEN GROVE LEAGUE : 1994 In Review : Highlights

Rancho Alamitos and Los Amigos dominated the league for the second consecutive season. Rancho Alamitos won the league title by trouncing Los Amigos, 28-9, behind the running of the league’s most valuable offensive player, Chris Young (1,645 yards, 22 touchdowns), a transfer from Edison who received a scholarship to Oregon after the season. Los Amigos was led by junior running back Greg Fausto (1,229 yards, 29 touchdowns, 6.7 yard average) and quarterback/safety Ape Tuato, who threw for 1,604 yards and 11 touchdowns. Lineman Hernan Payan of Los Amigos was named the league’s defensive MVP. Rancho Alamitos outscored its opponents, 320-152, and Los Amigos outscored its opponents, 336-123. As well as Rancho Alamitos and Los Amigos played in the regular season, they both lost in the first round of the Division VII playoffs. Rancho Alamitos, Division VII finalist in 1993, was beaten by Pomona Ganesha, 12-6, and Los Amigos was defeated by South Hills, 14-3. Garden Grove, the third-place team, didn’t fare any better, losing, 12-0, to Sunny Hills in the first round. The Argonauts finished in a three-way tie for third with Pacifica and Santiago, but gained the league’s last playoff berth by winning a coin flip. Garden Grove was led by senior running back Manuel Millan, who rushed for 746 yards, and junior quarterback Troy Haller, who threw for 717 yards and nine touchdowns. Pacifica, led by running back Tom Summers (835 yards and 12 touchdowns) and receiver Mike Parsons (38 receptions for 658 yards), finished 5-5 for the second year in a row. Under first-year Coach Ben Haley, Santiago won four games--more than it had the previous five years. It played Rancho Alamitos tougher than anyone in league. Santiago lost, 13-12, but had three touchdowns nullified by penalties.
