Two Palos Verdes Peninsula youths were recently awarded Certificates of Congressional Achievement for leading projects that aim to protect the South Bay ocean environment.

Christina Zangas of Palos Verdes Estates collected more than 1,000 signatures for a petition that asks people to take a stand against ocean pollution. Rep. Jane Harman (D-Rolling Hills) will present the petition to Congress in September as the eight-grader continues to gather signatures.

Christopher Lum, 14, participated in Heal the Bay’s Gutter Patrol program for an Eagle Scout project. Lum investigated the location, size and contents of 120 catch basins in his hometown of Rolling Hills Estates. The information he gathered is being used by the nonprofit organization to analyze pollution patterns in Santa Monica Bay.
