Dole Returns Gift From Gay GOP Group
CINCINNATI — Money from an organization of gay Republicans is not welcome in Sen. Bob Dole’s presidential campaign.
The campaign said Friday that it is giving back a $1,000 contribution from the Log Cabin Republicans because Dole, a Kansas Republican, disagrees with the group’s views.
Log Cabin Republicans, meeting in Cincinnati this weekend, said they were disappointed with the Dole campaign’s decision.
“We were encouraged by the Dole campaign for months to support them financially, and any indication that they were unaware of our involvement is dishonest,” said Rich Tafel, leader of the 10,000-member group. The check was cashed June 23, he said.
Deb Price, who writes about lesbian and gay issues, found the June 19 contribution in Federal Election Commission reports. In a column, she said Dole’s campaign decided to give the money back two days after learning she would be writing about it.
