Cal State Fullerton’s Kotsay Scores in Ninth Inning to Upset Cuba, 7-6
Cal State Fullerton’s Mark Kotsay doubled and scored the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth to lead Team USA to a 7-6 victory over Cuba on Saturday night at Millington, Tenn.
Cuba, reigning world champion, had a 5-0 lead after five innings and added a run in the top of the seventh.
Team USA rallied for one run in the fifth, three in the sixth, two in the seventh. UCLA’s Troy Glaus singled home Kotsay to win the game in the ninth.
Reliever Braden Looper of Wichita State was the winner. He pitched two innings and gave up no runs on two hits, a walk and two strikeouts.
The victory was the 11th consecutive for Team USA, which improved to 26-6.
Before the game, Cuban officials said they were searching for right-hander Osvaldo Fernandez, who appears to have defected to the United States.
