Playing in the first round of the Dutch Open at Hilversum, Netherlands, John Daly, fresh off his victory in the British Open, was the star attraction--except on the leader board.

Scott Hoch and Irishman Philip Walton took the spotlight from Daly, shooting six-under 65s to tie for the first-round lead.

Daly, who drew the biggest crowds, struggled to a 72.

One stroke behind the co-leaders were Terry Price of Australia, Thomas Levet of France, Alexander Cejka of Germany and Vijay Singh of Fiji.

Walton and Hoch matched the course record, set originally when the layout had a par of 72.

Tennis

With 48 hours to go before her long-awaited return to tennis in Atlantic City, N.J., a giddy Monica Seles said she’s excited and nervous, but determined to start having some fun on the court.

Seles, who faces Martina Navratilova in a made-for-TV exhibition, hasn’t played publicly since a deranged fan stabbed her in the back on April 30, 1993, in Hamburg, Germany.

“The emotional part, for me, for a long time was very real,” Seles said, “and I think I can’t forget that. I never will forget what happened to me. But for me to make this step, it’s the right time.”
