Westside : CAMP SOMEWHERE
Many inner-city kids who hope someday to be like Michael J, Dr. J or Reggie J often end up with No J . . . as in J-O-B.
One former Laker star has decided to do something about it.
He’s A. C. Green, and he’s back on an L.A.-area basketball court this week--at Westchester High to be exact--mixing it up with 100 inner-city youths at his 1995 A. C. Green Leadership Camp.
The weeklong camp offers boys and girls from 9 to 15 a chance to play basketball and learn about other careers with better chances of success, such as the law, engineering, law enforcement or the technical side of the entertainment business.
“A.C. wants to dispel the myth that if you are in the inner city, the only way out is through athletics,” said Daren Tyger, executive director of A. C. Green Programs for Youth, in Downtown.
Green, who covers the $150 cost for each participant, operates similar programs in his hometown of Portland, Ore., and in Phoenix, where he now plays as a forward for the Suns.
Ultimately, he would like the program to go nationwide, Tyger said.
