Hyundai Motor Co. to Resume Operations After Strike: South Korea’s largest car maker is expected to resume operations after intervention over the weekend by riot police to end a strike at the company’s plant in the southeastern city of Ulsan. More than 7,000 police were deployed there to search for union leaders and to prevent street protests following the arrest of about 280 workers who organized an illegal stoppage at the plant. The Hyundai union alliance plans to hold a rally to protest the action. The Federation of Hyundai Labor Union, which neither the government nor management recognizes, represents 50,000 members at 25 Hyundai companies. The deployment of riot police signals a tough new policy by the South Korean government to resist any increase in labor strife this year.
