SMALL FACES: Quincy Jones is working on the follow-up to his 1990 Grammy album of the year winner “Back on the Block.” This collection, due in June, will survey all the styles of Jones’ career as an arranger, producer, composer and performer, from ‘40s big-band jazz to ‘90s hip-hop. Guests include Babyface, Tevin Campbell and Queen Latifah. . . .

A film from footage shot during Nine Inch Nails’ just-concluded tour is being put together for possible summer release. As of now, there are no plans for an accompanying soundtrack album. . . .

Before heading overseas for his tour, Prince--or whatever you call him--did a remix of Boyz II Men’s song “U Know,” adding a new guitar solo in the process. The Boyz are co-managed by John Dukakis, former general manager of Prince’s Paisley Park Records (and son of 1988 Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis). . . .

The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bad Brains are set for a benefit concert April 1 at the Hollywood Palladium, with more acts to be announced. Proceeds will help send children in war-torn Serbia and Croatia to summer camp. Tickets go on sale Saturday. . . .

Patti Smith will make her first concert appearance in years on April 8 at the Ark, a small Ann Arbor, Mich., club, in tribute to her late husband, guitarist Fred (Sonic) Smith, who died last year. Smith will do two spoken-word and acoustic music sets, accompanied by longtime bandmate Lenny Kaye.

It’s not official yet, but it looks as if Justine Chiara, the manager of Afghan Whigs, is set to join the Gold Mountain management company, replacing Janet Billig, who left for an executive spot at Atlantic Records. Chiara will oversee Billig’s old roster of Dinosaur Jr., the Lemonheads and the Breeders--but not Hole, which left Gold Mountain after Billig’s exit.
