Janet Reno

“Reno Stepping Up Pursuit of Child-Support Delinquents” (Dec. 28) stated that “more than any other U.S. attorney general in history, Janet Reno has gone to bat for children.” Let’s consider her batting record.

Stating that her primary concern was for the “safety of the children,” Reno directed, and has accepted full responsibility for, the Waco fiasco in which scores of children were burned alive. Strike one!

Reno has consistently given abortion pro-choice groups preferential access to her office and has even furnished a number of them her home telephone number. She has steadfastly refused to even meet with pro-life groups. Strike two!

Finally, only after intervention from a poll-conscious White House did Reno change her departmental policy of not aggressively pursuing child pornographers in the courts. Her previous policy was to place the burden of responsibility on the child, not the pornographer! Strike three!

While her efforts on behalf of families entitled to child support are admirable, let’s keep things in perspective. Considering her record regarding children, I think it’s time for a pinch hitter.
