HAWTHORNE : Police Chief Is Named Acting City Manager
Police Chief Stephen R. Port has been named interim city manager while the city continues its search for a permanent chief administrator.
Port will continue as police chief and balance both jobs while city officials interview candidates for city manager, Mayor Larry Guidi said.
Port replaces interim manager James A. Algie, who came out of retirement in June to run the city for three months. That temporary position ends Friday. Since taking over, the former Long Beach chief financial officer has balanced the city’s budget and received praise from city officials.
“He has really cleaned up. He’s going to be a hard act to follow,” Guidi said.
The council has narrowed the field of candidates from 50 to eight and will begin interviewing the finalists next weekend, he said.
Although Port will be doing both jobs, he will not receive extra pay, Guidi said, and his double duty should only last a couple of weeks.
