COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Fuentes Paces Rancho Santiago to 31-14 Upset Over Palomar
Rancho Santiago’s Simon Fuentes threw for 241 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Dons to a 31-14 upset over defending national champion Palomar on Saturday at San Marcos High.
Fuentes had career bests in yards, touchdowns and completions with 18, in breaking Palomar’s 22-game winning streak.
Jon Daniels caught two 12-yard touchdown passes and Ernest Wilson and Kevin Pola each scored rushing touchdowns for the Dons.
In other Mission Conference games:
Cerritos 33, Saddleback 19--Two interception returns for touchdowns proved costly as Cerritos defeated host Saddleback.
On Saddleback’s second drive, Skinner Avinger returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown. After a Tim Knutson field goal, Saddleback’s Chris Stone caught an 11-yard touchdown pass to give the Gauchos (0-2) a 10-7 lead.
Cerritos (2-0) added two field goals to take a 13-10 halftime lead.
Kelley extended the Falcons’s lead with a 42-yard touchdown run on the fourth play of second half. Saddleback battled to the Falcon eight-yard line on the next drive when Derrick Winston intercepted a Garcia pass and ran 96 yards for a touchdown to take a 27-10 lead.
San Diego Mesa 38, Golden West 22--Aaron Buckner threw for 246 yards and four touchdowns, leading the host Olympians (1-1).
Buckner completed 17 of 20 passes, including scoring strikes of 34 and four yards to tight end Herman Dyson.
The Golden West offense did not come alive until the fourth quarter when the Rustlers (0-2-1) gained 228 of their 401 total yards.
