Ah, Shucks! It’s Time for the Corn Festival

Forty-six years ago, members of the La Habra Lions Club thought long and hard about fund raising. “They wanted something cheap, and members came up with corn-on-the-cob and a square dance,” says Chuck Overbey, chairman of the annual La Habra Corn Festival.

The event was a success and it’s become an annual community event--and a major fund-raiser that benefits visually and hearing-impaired people. Last year, more than 15,000 cobs were served.

There’s more to the event than nibbling corn, though. A Corn Festival Parade heads down La Habra Boulevard on Saturday, with marching bands, horse groups and politicians. There are carnival rides, arts and crafts, and a ‘90s version of a square dance--called line dancing--until 11:30 p.m.

Festivities begin Friday, 5:30-11:30 p.m. Saturday events kick off at 9:30 a.m. with the parade, followed by the other events at El Centro Lions Park, 150 N. Cypress, La Habra.

Everything is free (except, of course, the corn). (310) 691-3482.
