A $750,000 federal grant has been awarded to the Opportunities Industrialization Center to help pay for employment training and development services for dislocated workers, the long-term unemployed and other residents of neighborhoods hit by the 1992 riots.

The center, at 11100 S. Western Ave., was awarded the grant this month from the U.S. Department of Labor. The center receives funding from public and private sectors and offers out-of-work residents training for jobs in stores, restaurants and auto repair shops.

Since the center started offering classes in January, center officials said, 140 students have completed or enrolled in training programs for jobs in retail sales, office occupations, culinary arts and automotive services. Officials project graduating 300 people a year.
