In Brief
* * 1/2 El DeBarge, “Heart, Mind and Soul,” Reprise. DeBarge has yet to record an album that doesn’t contain some stylistic vestiges of Marvin Gaye. This album is no exception, but what it lacks in originality it makes up in good, Gaye-inspired, boudoir soul, particularly on producer-composer Babyface’s “Where You Are” and “Can’t Get Enough.”
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
